Maya is 34, a software engineer in Melbourne on $115,000. She wants two numbers checked: what she takes home from each pay this year (2026–27), and whether the tax taken from her pay last year matched what she owes on her 2025–26 return. The maths below is the same the ATO runs, for her salary and five others people search for most.
Quick answer — take-home pay 2026–27 (no HECS, no sacrifice):
- $80,000 → $63,880 in hand ($5,323/month)
- $100,000 → $77,480 in hand ($6,457/month)
- $115,000 → $87,680 in hand ($7,307/month)
- $150,000 → $110,430 in hand ($9,203/month)
Each is $268 a year more than in 2025–26. Add your deductions to see your real refund → Tax Calculator

2026–27 resident rates (15% / 30% / 37% / 45%), 2% Medicare levy, no HECS, no salary sacrifice, no deductions, hospital cover held (or income under the surcharge threshold). The Low Income Tax Offset is $0 at these salaries — it phases out fully at $66,667. Fortnightly figures are annual ÷ 26; PAYG withholding tables round slightly differently pay-to-pay.
How These Numbers Are Built
Three components, in order. Income tax uses the 2026–27 resident brackets: nothing to $18,200, then 15c per dollar to $45,000, 30c to $135,000, 37c to $190,000 and 45c above. Medicare levy adds a flat 2% of taxable income. Low earners pay less (for 2025–26 the levy shades in from $28,011; the 2026–27 figure is set in the May 2027 Budget), but everyone in this table pays the full 2%. Offsets then reduce the bill, but the main one, the Low Income Tax Offset, is fully phased out by $66,667, so it is $0 at every salary above.
What the table leaves out, because each is personal: HECS-HELP (repayments start at $69,528 of repayment income in 2026–27: about $1,571 a year at $80,000 and $12,476 at $150,000 — the HECS calculator shows your exact figure), salary sacrifice (reduces the cash component but cuts total tax — see the salary sacrifice calculator), the Medicare Levy Surcharge (an extra 1–1.5% above $105,000 in 2026–27 without hospital cover), and deductions, the part you control most directly at tax time.
Every dollar you legitimately deduct comes back at your marginal rate — 32c to 39c per dollar at these salaries. The calculator ranks profession-specific deductions by dollar value.
The 32% That Matters More Than the 24%
Maya's average tax rate is about 24%, but her marginal rate is 32% (30% bracket plus 2% Medicare). The marginal rate is the one that prices every decision: a $5,000 pay rise delivers $3,400 after tax, a $1,000 deduction returns $320, and an hour of overtime keeps 68% of its headline rate. For most full-time earners, from about $67,000 to $135,000, the marginal rate is a flat 32%. It jumps to 39% above $135,000, but only the dollars above $135,000 pay the higher rate. To see what a specific rise is worth in real, after-inflation terms, run it through the pay rise calculator.
Lodging a 2025–26 Return? Use These Figures
Your 2025–26 tax return uses the 2025–26 rates, when the bottom bracket was 16%. Take-home at each salary was $268 lower than in 2026–27. The deadline for lodging your own 2025–26 return is 31 October 2026 (lodgements on Monday 2 November count as on time, because the 31st is a Saturday). If you were on a registered tax agent's list by then, you usually have until 15 May 2027.

Frequently Asked Questions
How much is $115,000 after tax in Australia?
$87,680 a year in 2026–27, which is $7,307 a month or about $3,372 a fortnight. That's after $25,020 of income tax and a $2,300 Medicare levy, an average tax rate of 23.8%. For your 2025–26 tax return the figure is $87,412. It assumes no HECS debt, no salary sacrifice, no deductions, and that you have private hospital cover or earn under the surcharge threshold. Any of those changes the figure.
How much is $100,000 after tax in Australia?
$77,480 a year in 2026–27: $6,457 a month or about $2,980 a fortnight. That's after $20,520 of income tax and a $2,000 Medicare levy, an average rate of 22.5%. For 2025–26 it was $77,212. The difference is the bottom tax rate, which fell from 16% to 15% on 1 July 2026 and adds $268 a year at this salary.
How much tax do I pay on $80,000 in Australia?
For 2026–27: $14,520 of income tax plus a $1,600 Medicare levy, $16,120 in total, leaving $63,880 ($5,323 a month). Your average tax rate is 20.2%. For 2025–26 the total was $16,388. Your marginal rate, the tax on each extra dollar, is 32% (30% plus the 2% Medicare levy), and that's the rate that matters for overtime, a pay rise or a new deduction.
Why is my payslip take-home different from these figures?
Usually one of four things. HECS: compulsory repayments start at $69,528 of repayment income in 2026–27 and come out of each pay. Salary sacrifice or salary packaging lowers your cash pay. The Medicare levy surcharge (1% to 1.5%) applies above $105,000 in 2026–27 if you don't have private hospital cover. And the tax taken from each pay is worked out with ATO tables that round differently from the yearly calculation, which usually evens out as a small refund at tax time.
What is the difference between marginal and average tax rate?
Your marginal rate is the tax on your next dollar: 32% for most incomes from $45,001 to $135,000 in 2026–27, including the Medicare levy. Your average rate is your total tax divided by your total income, between 20% and 27% for the salaries in this guide. Pay rises and deductions are worth your marginal rate: a $5,000 deduction at 32% saves you $1,600 in tax, not $5,000.
